Abstract [eng] The application of cartographic methods in various areas of social activity creates conditions for the emergence of cartographic functional styles. Cartographic functional styles indicate not what is depicted on the map, but how it is depicted. This is achieved by using the tools of cartographic language. The aim of this work is to describe and justify a mechanism that would allow practical examples of functional map styles to be combined into a functioning and evolving system that would allow those examples to survive. In order to examine the peculiarities of cartographic language, it is necessary to examine the functions of graphic means of expression, which become figures of cartographic language in cartographic images (metaphor, ellipsis, hyperbole, etc.). These figures are studied in detail in linguistics. The study assumes that the application of linguistic principles to the means of expression in cartographic works allows the formation of a corresponding functional style of maps related to the needs of future users. The study showed that the stylistic diversity of maps can be divided into the following main cartographic functional styles: documentary, scientific, informational, and rhetorical. An analysis of the characteristics of cartographic language helps to describe cartographic functional styles. A clear form of information presentation is the basis of cartographic functional styles, while expressiveness, persuasiveness, and impact contribute to it. The work is illustrated with practical examples of cartographic functional styles related to the topical issue of wind energy in Lithuania.
