This study presents the territorial characteristics of the change in the network of general education schools providing education in Polish and Russian languages in Lithuania between 2001 and 2023. The data presented herein were collected from the AIKOS and ŠVIS systems, the State Data Agency, and the Ministry of Education and Science. It was observed that the number of schools decreased by 24.6 percent in the territory of the subject. The most affected municipalities were those in which the share of Polish and Russian national minorities decreased during the analysed period. This phenomenon may be attributed, at least in part, to the exodus of migrants, particularly those of Russian origin, which commenced in the restoring of Lithuania's independence. The observed decline in birth rates and the concomitant rise in death rates are also likely contributors to this trend. |
