In this paper, I discuss a variant reading at line 1029 a6 of Aristotle's Metaphysics. While in the manuscripts E and J (that witness to the alpha branch of the manuscript tradition) we read του εξ αμϕοιν, the reading το εξ αμϕοιν is also preserved. I dwell on Alexander's De anima and argue that the reading το εξ αμϕοιν is also attested in the indirect tradition. Next, I analyze the structure of Aristotle's argument and conclude that the reading το εξ αμϕοιν is likely to be genuine. |
