Abstract [eng] The article examines male surnames recorded in the 1922–1928 marriage record book of Ramygala that have not been preserved in modern Lithuanian. The aim of this study is to identify the relationships between non-preserved surnames and present-day Lithuanian surnames, and to reveal regional features and the influence of scribes on the form of surnames. The non-preserved surnames were divided into three groups: those with unique stems or suffixes different from present-day surnames, regional surname variants, and orthographic surname variants resulting from scribes’ spelling practices or errors. The personal names analysed were compared with surnames recorded in the Lithuanian Surname Dictionary, and their structure, regional distribution, and recorded forms were examined. It was established that the personal names recorded in the marriage record book reflect surname forms used by local inhabitants. Some non-preserved personal names differ from present-day surnames because they have a different stem or because different suffixes have been added to stems that are attested in other surnames in the present-day personal name inventory. Other surnames reflect features of the Eastern Aukštaitian Panevėžys subdialect, while still others reveal scribes’ orthographic practices, more specifically in the use of letters with diacritical marks. Although Lithuanian-language marriage record books of the first half of the twentieth century constitute an important source for the history of surnames, they must be assessed critically because the same surname forms are recorded with variants.
