Abstract [eng] It is not an easy task for a Lithuanian, studying French, to remember every noun that has its own inherent grammatical relevance, gender (which is expressed by suffixes and articles, that do not exist in Lithuanian language). Figuring out the gender category of a French L2 noun phrase is a complex and time consuming process. The data of the text corpus proves that students whose French language level is B1 have not fully comprehended the grammatical category of the gender on all linguistic competence levels. Based on the collected data, a student often does not assign a fixed gender, and if in doubt about which gender should one or another noun be assigned to, eventually decides on masculine gender as a universal choice, which in French language is less codified than feminine gender and is interpreted as a main gender from which other forms, such as feminine gender and plural form are derived. The results of the empirical data analysis of the text corpus performed by the students prove that the cause is in the system of the French language itself. Student assigns the gender of the noun by using a semantic analogy, form or meaning analogy from student’s first language or from a well-learned word in L2; sometimes other languages spoken by the student come into play, usually it is English. In terms of the coordination of determiners and adjectives, statistics proves that there are less mistakes in determiner coordination compared to adjectives; as adjective is mostly used in masculine form, regardless of the noun gender To summarize the results, it can be stated that considering the used coordinated words, substantial part of the nouns was assigned to the correct gender.
