The goal of the thesis is to present the theoretical grounds of simultaneous interpreting and to determine which problem triggers have the greatest effect on the interpreting result when interpreting from English into Lithuanian. In the thesis problem triggers are defined as any element in the original speech and (or) its delivery (speaker’s accent, speech rate, technical terminology etc.) that increases the processing capacity requirements of an interpreter and may be a cause of a negative interpreting result. Problem triggers have not been researched in their entirety, usually the focus being on one specific problem trigger. This study is the first attempt to analyse a whole set of problem triggers by using a common conceptual framework and to assess how they affect the parameters of interpreting quality – accuracy and fluency of delivery. The major novelty of this research lies in the application of the econometric method of regression analysis used to study the empirical data of interpreting: the data of the experiment were used to quantify the effects of problem triggers on the errors and omissions made in shorter segments of the speech (micro level) and the data of the case study were used for the analysis of longer segments (macro level). The research has shown that at different levels of analysis the interpreting result is affected by different problem triggers: propositional density has the greatest negative effect at the micro level, while speech rate plays the biggest role at the macro level. The only problem triggers that remain statistically significant at both levels are lexical problem triggers related to the information to be rendered by way of deverbalization rather than transcoding. |
