Abstract [eng] We present a comprehensive experimental and theoretical analysis of high repetition rate and high average power femtosecond pulse amplification and temporal compression in a hybrid pre-chirp managed amplification (PCMA) and fiber chirped pulse amplification (FCPA) system. We investigate the influence of initial pulse chirp, gain dynamics and nonlinear self-phase modulation on the temporal and spectral characteristics of amplified pulses. Numerical simulation results agreed well with experiments and demonstrated that improper selection of the input chirp at a constant amplified pulse output power can lead to poor pulse compression quality. Our analysis explains the relation between pre-chirp and output pulse compressibility and provides important insights into optimizing hybrid PCMA–FCPA systems for generating high average power and high repetition rate femtosecond laser systems with nearly transform-limited pulse durations.
