Abstract [eng] Equal political participation and engagement of women and men in municipal councils are essential for more effective local policymaking, representing the interests of diverse social groups, and improving community quality of life. Despite the efforts of international and national organisations, women’s political participation in Lithuanian local government, it has progressed very slowly, and their representation in municipal councils seeks just up to 30 percent. Intersectionality offers a valuable framework to understand how various characteristics—such as gender, age, education, and socioeconomic status—interact and influence women’s and men’s political participation processes, shaping and differentiating their practices in elections. This study contributes to the understanding of success factors in local government elections by highlighting intersectional differences that determine women’s and men’s political participation. It demonstrates how demographic, professional, and socioeconomic traits, along with their interactions, differentiate council members based on gender and influence the successful political participation of women and men, based on the 2023 municipal election results. The research is based on a quantitative content analysis of biographical data of women and men elected as members of municipal councils. Findings reveal that women’s (un)success in local elections is not only determined by gender, but also by a whole complex of interrelated characteristics such as marital status, age-generation, level of education, employment in the relevant sector, and income level. Marital status and age further shaped differing assumptions about involvement in political activities, with traditional gender roles continuing to impact the political participation of the older generation. Women employed in the public and non-governmental sectors, particularly those with higher education, were more advantageously positioned for political participation. In contrast, economic background (incomes) played a more pivotal role for candidates working in the private sector. These interactions created diverse opportunities for political participation, underscoring the need to evaluate these factors not in isolation but as interconnected structural conditions that affect women’s and men’s political representation at municipal councils. These insights can inform policy development and the design of measures aimed at encouraging greater political involvement among women in Lithuania.
