Most of the societies in the world rate education as one of the fundamental parts of human life, thus new strategies and conceptions are being created, possibilities of institutional education improvement are being searched for taking into consideration challenges of the changing world. In the context of globalization demand for multicultural education, which prompts better perception of one‘s own and different cultures, is revealed. Though the press is a significant tool not only perceiving different cultures but also forming society‘s opinion, elucidation of problems of the national minorities in Lithuanian press is not much investigated. The object of the study is the publications of weekly newspaper Dialogas published between 1992–2013. Since 2014, after the weekly newspaper ceased its work, there did not appear an education publication which would cope with the variety of topics and pay attention to the national minorities. The problem of the study is expressed by questions “How and what education problems of the national minorities were revealed in Dialogas?” “What is the situation of the educational press after this publication had ceased its work?” Such hypotheses are stated: in the publications of Dialogas the common tendencies of educational problems of the national minorities can be recognized and after the work of the publication had been ceased the situation of educational press in Lithuania grew worse, teachers and administration staff of schools lack the alternatives. The goal of the study is to research what and how was written about education of the national minorities, what is the situation of educational press and readers’ demand after it had ceased its work. In the theoretical part the policy of educational changes of the national minorities between 1992–2013 are revealed, it is stated that their elucidation in Lithuanian press is not much investigated. It is also reviewed what are the functions of journalism and the influence of the press while forming society’s opinion. In the empiric part the qualitative and quantitative methods are combined. The qualitative contest analysis of the publications showed that in the texts, which are attributed to economical, psychological, cultural and political theoretical perspectives, reflecting different problems were published. Revealing the educational problems of the national minorities the texts of information genre dominated while analytical and estimating texts were rarely published. The publications correspond to all functions of the journalism: informational, explanatory, educational, cultural and entertainment. After brief qualitative research of the publications it was noticed that in the publications the common tendencies of educational problems of the national minorities can be recognized. After a questionnaire inquest was done, it was stated that the present situation of educational press in Lithuania is rated negatively by the teachers and school administration staff, and the need of this kind of the publications is not satisfied. |
