Abstract [eng] Eastern Highlanders Dialect of North Part of Panevėžys Use in Social Network Facebook: A Case Study The thesis analyses the author’s communications on the social media network Facebook with ten representatives of various age speaking the sub-dialect of Northern Panevėžys of the Eastern Highlanders. The materials are analysed on a morphological and phonetical level. Since the author herself is a user of the latter sub-dialect, the author’s speech is analysed next to the material analysis from four family members and six friends. The thesis aims to find out how dialectisms characteristic to oral dialectal language are recorded on Facebook. Objective of thesis: to analyse what peculiarities of the sub-dialect are used in the discourse of Facebook. The method of qualitative linguistic analysis has been selected for the study. The study materials are comprised from communications of 2015-2016 with representatives of the sub-dialect. The thesis consists of an introduction, a theoretical and practical part, conclusions, reference list used, a summary in English and appendices. On generalization of results, it can be stated that oral dialectal language is transferred to electronic discourse, i. e. written discourse is an accurate reflection of oral speech. There are cases when a person uses expressions of standard and dialectal language both in the same conversation. It has been considered that not all dialectal cases may be relevant to this study as they are not reliable, i. e. it is difficult to distance oneself from the peculiarities of electronic discourse, such as writing without diacritics or abbreviations. The materials collected and processed demonstrate certain changes of oral dialectal language that are reflected in contemporary written electronic discourse. The study may be of use to dialectologists, researchings dialects not only from an oral, but also a written perspective; to sociolinguists analysing the interaction between standard language and dialects, the circumstances surrounding the choice of linguistic code and the issue of language variation. This thesis will also add to the scarce field of already completed studies on communication in electronic discourse and will be one of the first sociolinguistic studies analysing written discourse of the sub-dialect of Northern Panevėžys on the social media network Facebook.
