Figures of Speech in Lithuanian Sign Language This thesis analyzes figures of speech in artistic expression of Lithuanian Sign Language (LSL) which is completely unexplored field in both Lithuania and abroad. Taken that into consideration – figures of speech throughout this work defines expressions, which enables emotional and aesthetic functions of language. The research of this thesis raises problem of what and how artistic expressions are applied in LSL. The purpose of this thesis is to analyze authentic LSL works of art: artistic, publicist, colloquium discourses and identify what and how artistic expressions are used, and using that – provide recommendations to LSL translators. Analysis consists of video recordings: 15 LSL works of art (21 min., 55 sec.), 5 lectures (5 hours, 53 min.), 30 publicist type video recordings (59 min., 32 sec.). Video recordings were analyzed through qualitative analysis, colloquium discourse additionally used observation methods. In conclusion – research results prove that LSL works of art feature the following forms of figure of speech: hand shape, location and movement, symmetry – both vertical, horizontal, back-and-fourth symmetry, non-manual elements, neologisms, which enables rhetoric and double meaning idioms as well as cinematography. All those means are common to LSL art. Research unveiled especially frequent uses of repetition, vertical symmetry, non-manual elements. Scientific LSL discourse analysis discovered artistic forms of expressions (as this was expected, because material is aimed to promote science among wide audience). Neologisms and non-manual elements were used to express rhetoric meanings. Publicist LSL discourse research registered only non-manual elements and neologisms. Colloquial discourse identified wide use of rhetoric gestures, which are constantly used by deaf, but not translated by Lithuanian Sign Language Dictionary (LSLD). Conclusions of this research are beneficial to LSLD interpreters (special recommendations are listed) as well as LSLD authors who may find new expressions of rhetoric as a useful amendments. Research will also help Sign Language researchers in their work throughout discourses, SL art, and artistic expressions. Sign Language educators can use findings to improve their teaching methods and programs. This work is small step in the research of figures of speech in LSL. Work is limited by size of research materials and angles of research, movement holds were left outside the scope. |
