Abstract [eng] The Surplus of Meaning in "Death in Venice" by Thomas Mann This MA paper analyses Thomas Mann’s novella Death in Venice, drawing on Gerard Genette’s definition of internal focalisation of narrative discourse and Paul Ricoeur’s theory of the surplus of meaning. In Genette’s terms, the method of internal focalisation is predominantly used in Mann’s novella, which allows to focus the interpretation of the text on the inner processes of the protagonist’s consciousness. For the analysis of the surplus of meaning in Mann’s narrative, Paul Ricoeur’s notions of world and environment, language and discourse are used. The main aim of this MA paper is to identify the surplus of meaning in Mann’s novella Death in Venice. The analysis shows that the surplus of meaning is conveyed through the protagonist Aschenbach’s bodily experience, which transforms Aschenbach’s idealistic view of the world into pre-mortal inter-subjective life experience.
