Abstract [eng] Goda Draukšaitė's master's thesis topic „The Compliance of Antibiotics Consumption in Hospitals with the Principles of Rational Antibiotic Use". Academic supervisor: Prof. Dr. Kristina Garuolienė. Vilnius University, Institute of Biomedical Sciences Center of Pharmacy and Pharmacology, Vilnius, 2026. Purpose of the research – To determine the opinion of physicians on their competence and the influence of other factors on the rational use of antibiotics in Lithuanian inpatient treatment institutions. Research objectives: 1. To assess antibiotic consumption indicators in Lithuanian inpatient treatment institutions. 2. To determine how doctors evaluate their competence and whether this affects the rational use of antibiotics in Lithuanian inpatient treatment institutions. 3. To identify what factors affect the rational use of antibiotics in Lithuanian inpatient treatment institutions. Research methodology – Analysis of data from the Institute of Hygiene and quantitative research. Data from the Institute of Hygiene were used to assess antibiotic consumption in inpatient treatment institutions. The instrument of the quantitative research was an anonymous survey. The survey was sent to the administrative e-mails of 12 selected inpatient treatment institutions. Data were collected in February - April 2026. Statistical analysis was performed using IBM SPSS Statistics. The results of the study were analysed using descriptive statistics, chi-square (χ²) test, Spearman's rank correlation and regression analysis. Research results – The highest VTD/1000 bed-days rate was determined in the regional-level hospital E - 801.04, and the lowest - in the district-level hospital L - 112.67. The study included 74 physicians. It was found that physician competence had a statistically significant effect on the rational use of antibiotics (β = 0.571; p < 0.001). Physician behaviour in practice (β = 0.120; p = 0.213) and organizational environment (β = 0.083; p = 0.459) did not have a statistically significant effect on the rational use of antibiotics. Conclusions: 1. The highest VTD/1000 bed-days rate was determined in regional-level hospital E, and the lowest - in district-level hospital L. The difference between these rates was about 7 times. 2. It was found that doctors assessed their own competence favourably, and their self-assessment of competence has a significant impact on the rational use of antibiotics in Lithuanian inpatient treatment institutions. 3. It was identified that organizational environmental conditions also have a role in the rational use of antibiotics, but their impact was not as strong as doctors' competence. Doctors' behaviour had no statistically significant impact on the rational use of antibiotics. Keywords: Physicians‘ competence, rational use of antibiotics, Lithuanian inpatient medical institutions, organizational environment, doctors' behaviour.
