Epidemiological research has shown an association between maternal caffeine intake and adverse pregnancy outcomes, but the biological mechanisms behind these effects are still not well understood. Recent animal studies show adverse effects of caffeine during pregnancy in terms of oviduct contractility, uterine receptivity, embryo development, and placentation that together contribute to pregnancy complications. Notably, even under controlled laboratory conditions, individual animals display considerable variability in their responses to caffeine, pointing to a potential role for epigenetic regulation alongside genetic differences. Nevertheless, genetic variants influencing caffeine metabolism (such as CYP1A2 or ADORA2A polymorphisms) differ by region and ethnicity. That’s why it would be beneficial to carry out similar studies in various settings and among different populations, including Lithuania. Participation in this study was voluntary and anonymous, and data was handled confidentially through online questionnaire. According to research results, there was no statistically significant effect of caffeine on pregnancy found. However, the extensive literature review and animal-model studies suggest that effect may be much less prominent, but still sufficient to even influence further generations. |
