Abstract [eng] Oncological diseases are one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Alongside physical symptoms, patients often experience significant mental health disorders. Anxiety disorders are among the most common psychological difficulties in the population of patients with cancer, affecting treatment adherence, decision-making, and quality of life. Despite this, their recognition in clinical practice remains insufficient, especially due to the complex overlap of somatic and psychological symptoms. The aim of this study is to evaluate the dynamics of anxiety symptoms in a patient with an oncological disease throughout the course of the illness and treatment, to assess their impact on quality of life, and, based on scientific literature, to review the theoretical and clinical aspects of these phenomena. The objectives include an analysis of scientific literature on anxiety disorders in oncology patients, assessment of anxiety symptoms in a specific patient, evaluation of their changes over time, and analysis of their associations with quality of life and emotional state. The study employed long term patient observation, combining quantitative assessment methods (Distress Thermometer with Problems List, Patient Health Questionnaire-9, Generalized Anxiety Disorder scale-7) and qualitative data obtained through semi-structured interviews with the patient and his wife. Long-term observation showed that anxiety symptoms varied dynamically throughout the course of the oncological disease and were closely related to disease progression, treatment stages, and psychosocial factors. The highest level of distress was observed during active treatment and disease progression, when both physical and emotional symptoms were prominent. In later stages, temporary stabilization of emotional state was observed, associated with the use of adaptive coping strategies and social support. However, with the onset of neurological impairments and further disease progression, emotional lability, behavioral changes, and anxiety symptoms of organic origin became more evident. It was found that self-report scales do not always accurately reflect the patient’s actual condition, highlighting the importance of comprehensive assessment, including clinical interviews and insights from close relatives. The results indicate that anxiety symptoms significantly affect the patient’s quality of life, daily functioning, and interpersonal relationships. Therefore, consistent assessment and comprehensive care are essential to ensure holistic support for oncology patients.
