Aim: To investigate and evaluate the current landscape of anterior cruciate ligament construction and grafts used and present an idea of a new type of “vascularized” anterior cruciate ligament graft. Objective: Search the literature about the methods for anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction over the years and look for benefits with different methods, and compile them to easily refer to each to show the development that has been happening during the years, as well as provide information about our research on developing a new type of “vascularized” anterior cruciate ligament graft. Methodology: This master’s thesis is based on a narrative format and case presentation. Most of the articles are from the last ten years; however, some older publications were included if they seemed relevant and useful to the context and content of this thesis. An open literature search was conducted to gather supporting material and explore the current landscape of anterior cruciate ligament surgeries. Research on vascularized grafts was conducted hands-on using cadaveric materials. Results: The field of anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction has advanced significantly in recent years, with many graft types. Our idea of a vascularized graft could be a viable alternative to current grafts. Further studies are needed to improve the surgical technique and to investigate tissue morbidity. The findings regarding the size of anatomical structures are the basis of a vascularized graft to succeed. |
