Abstract [eng] This study examined the relationship between adverse childhood experiences, intimate partner violence perpetration, and emotion regulation difficulties in a sample of adult men. The aim was to determine the correlational and prognostic relationships between the aforementioned variables, as well as the moderating role of emotion regulation difficulties in the relationship between adverse childhood experiences and intimate partner violence perpetration. 108 adult men participated in this study, 43 of whom were intimate partner violence perpetrators and 65 were subjects from the general population. The study participants constituted a non-probability purposive and convenience type of collected sample. The data was collected by completing a questionnaire in electronic format. The Childhood Trauma Questionnaire – Short Form (Bernstein et al., 2003) was used to assess adverse childhood experiences, the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (Gratz & Roemer, 2004) – to assess emotion regulation difficulties, and the Intimate Partner Violence Perpetration Scale was developed for this study to assess intimate partner violence perpetration. A positive correlation and prognostic relationship was established between adverse childhood experiences and intimate partner violence perpetration and its different types; between adverse childhood experiences and emotion regulation difficulties; and also between emotion regulation difficulties and intimate partner violence perpetration and its different types. It was found that emotion regulation difficulties moderate the relationship between adverse childhood experiences and intimate partner violence perpetration in general, as well as the relationship between adverse childhood experiences and physical and sexual, but not psychological (emotional) violence, against an intimate partner. Violence perpetrators scored higher on adverse childhood experiences, emotion regulation difficulties, and intimate partner violence perpetration and its different types than adult men from the general population. Considering the results obtained, it can be concluded that there is a relationship between adverse childhood experiences, intimate partner violence perpetration and emotion regulation difficulties.
