Abstract [eng] This paper compares German civil law terms and their Lithuanian equivalents in two sources: the German-Lithuanian, Lithuanian-German Business and Legal Dictionary (2018) and the EU terminology database IATE. The starting point of the study is the challenges that arise when translating legal terms. The paper aims to determine the level of consistency in civil law terminology between traditional lexicography and the EU’s institutional terminology management system. A corpus of 248 German terms was selected from the dictionary (property, obligations, family, and inheritance law). Using a comparative method, a search was conducted in the IATE system to assess the accuracy and reliability of equivalents. The study revealed a significant gap—as many as 89.5% of the terms examined had no Lithuanian equivalents in the IATE database. Of the entries found, only 5% corresponded in meaning to civil law concepts. Most of the equivalents found in IATE were attributed to other fields (finance, environmental protection, etc.). It was concluded that in the field of civil law, a dictionary should be the primary source ensuring the accurate translation of legal texts from German into Lithuanian.
