Objective: Eustachian tube dysfunction is problematic to diagnose and this otologic problem burdens many patients yearly. Finding the correct diagnosis for Eustachian tube dysfunction is later essential for the selection of the treatment. The aim of this literature review is to show diagnostics difficulties and find a proper treatment methods according to the different Eustachian tube dysfunction subtypes. Methods: Recent articles are gathered from existing literature regarding Eustachian tube dysfunction pathophysiology, diagnostics and treatment modalities. Results: Eustachian tube dysfunction is usually divided into three most common subtypes. These include obstructive type, patulous type and baro-challenge-induced type. A diagnostic pathway with multiple objective tools helps to differentiate between the types. Surgical treatment currently overrides medical management, but if combined it may show better results. Eustachian Tube Dysfunction Questionnaire-7 can be used to evaluate the effectives of the surgical procedures, noting it is a subjective tool. Conclusions: This literature review shows the importance of finding out and diagnosing the underlying pathophysiology to initiate proper treatment to enhance the quality of life. |
