This MA thesis focuses on periphrastic manipulative and causative constructions in Lithuanian, Latvian, Livonian, and Estonian. The main aim is to analyze and compare the usage of these syntactic constructions in all four languages. The analysis was done by collecting samples of manipulative and causative constructions with the Lithuanian verbs liepti, įsakyti, uždrausti, prašyti, and leisti, versti, priversti, duoti, spausti, Latvian verbs pavēlēt, liegt, lūgt, likt, and ļaut, laist, likt, dot, spiest, Livonian verbs käskõ, pānda, kīeldõ, pallõ, and laskõ, andõ, vēļõ, pīkstõ, pānda, as well as Estonian verbs käskima, keelama, küsima, paluma, and andma, laskma, lubama, panema, sundima, survestama, tõukama, võimaldama. The constructions were grouped by the above-mentioned verbs and were analyzed and compared by their functions and argument structure. The analysis showed that the caused event is usually marked by the infinitive in all four languages. The causee can be marked by the dative in all constructions in Lithuanian, Latvian, and Livonian, except for those based on Lithuanian prašyti ‘ask’ and Livonian pallõ ‘ask’. The causee is marked by the adessive in Estonian manipulative and permissive constructions, and by the partitive form in factitive constructions, except for those based on andma ‘give’. This work could be of interest to the researchers working on morphosyntax of Lithuanian, Latvian, Livonian, and Estonian. |
