Abstract [eng] Epicardial adipose tissue is a metabolically active fat storage. Because of its close anatomical relationship with myocardium, epicardial fat participates in physiological and pathological processes in the heart. Under pathological state, epicardial adipose tissue tranforms into proinflammatory and pro-atherogenic phenotype, which contribute to structural and electrical changes of myocardium and increase the susceptibility to cardiac arrhythmias. The aim of this thesis is to review the current literature of epicardial fat and its role in arrhythmias. This literature review included scientific articles published within the last 10 years. Articles used in the thesis focused on physiology, pathophysiology, imaging and arrhythmogenicity of epicardial fat. Current information show a strong association between increased epicardial adipose tissue and atrial fibrillation. Similar mechanisms can increase the risk for ventricular arrhythmias, but also low amount of epicardial adipose tissue can lead to ventricular arrhythmias. Epicardial fat has an important role in the development of arrhythmias. More information is needed regarding the association of epicardial adipose tissue and ventricular arrhythmias.
