Abstract [eng] The purpose of this work was to prepare mixed metal layered double hydroxides (LDHs) and to study the effect of the composition of the hydroxide layer and the nature of interlayer anions on the sorption of chromate(VI) ions. Mg₂Cu₀.₅Zn₀.₅Al₁ LDHs were obtained by the co-precipitation method, followed by anion exchange to form the carbonate (LDH CO₃) and chloride (LDH Cl) forms. XRD, FTIR, SEM, BET and TG DSC and ICP methods were used to characterize the materials. Based on the results obtained, it was concluded that the sorption capacity of chloride form was much higher than the carbonate form for the removal of Cr(VI). Following sorption, typical bands of FTIR spectra corresponding to chromates (887 and 935 cm⁻¹) were observed. Based on XRD and BET data, it was concluded that in the chloride form, the exchange of anions takes place in the interlayer, while in the carbonate form, the adsorption process predominated on the surface. Overall, Mg₂Cu₀.₅Zn₀.₅Al₁ -LDH has excellent adsorption properties for toxic Cr(VI) anions from water. The results show that the right choice of interlayer anions is essential to obtain suitable environmental remediation materials.
