In the face of climate change, society faces challenges in protecting mental health from negative impacts and mantaining engagement in solving environmental problems. Therefore, the study examined the relationship between climate change anxiety and coping and the role of trait-anxiety, neuroticism and symptoms of depression, anxiety and stress. A correlational study was conducted to examine the relationships between constructs. A non-probability, convenience sampling was used to select the participants. The study sample consisted of 429 study participants (316 women, 93 men, 8 non-binary individuals and 12 respondents who did not want to identify their gender), aged from 18 to 72 years. The Hogg climate change anxiety scale was used to assess climate change anxiety, the Climate change coping scale was used to measure climate change anxiety coping, Penn State Worry Questionnaire abbreviated version was used to assess trait-anxiety, the Depression, anxiety, stress scale – 21 was used to measure depression, anxiety and stress symptoms and Mini-International Personality Item Pool neuroticism items were used to assess neuroticism. The study found that avoidance-oriented coping was predicted by rumination (constant thinking about the future and climate change) and behavioral symptoms (difficulties in daily functioning), while problem oriented coping was predicted by rumination and anxiety about one‘s negative impact on the planet (concern about the value of individual actions in solving a global problem). Moderation analysis showed that many models were insignificant, and in most cases the independent variables explained only a very small proportion of the coping strategies used. The topic analyzed in this study may be significant in the clinical practice of psychologists. |
