Although research indicates that non-sexual physical contact is sometimes used in the therapeutic relationship, there is still limited knowledge about clients’ experiences and interpretations when encountering this phenomenon. This study aimed to explore clients’ experiences of non-sexual physical contact with mental health professionals. The participants were one man and six women (aged 23–53) who had experienced non-sexual physical contact within the context of talking therapy. A qualitative research strategy was employed – data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analysed using reflexive thematic analysis. Three main themes were identified through the analysis: 1) “The same physical action – different outcome”, 2) “Physical contact adds humanity to the relationship” and 3) “Physical contact raises questions about professional boundaries”. The study highlighted the multifaceted nature of clients’ experiences of non-sexual physical contact, demonstrating that the meaning attributed to such interactions was shaped by the therapeutic relationship, emotional response, and perceptions of professional boundaries. The findings broaden the understanding of non-sexual physical contact in the therapeutic context and highlight the importance of considering this phenomenon not only through the lens of professional boundaries but also through the prism of the client’s subjective experience. The findings of the study may be valuable for professional discussions, training for mental health professionals, and future research. |
