Abstract [eng] Existential experience — a fundamental confrontation with one’s own mortality that encourages one to live authentically. Advanced cancer often involves this experience. The research question arises : how does a person with cancer exist in the world while facing death? The aim of this study is to understand the existential experience of people with cancer who are facing death. The study included five people aged 64–82 with advanced cancer who were receiving palliative care services at a healthcare facility. These individuals’ experiences were explored within a qualitative framework using semi-structured interviews, and the research data were analyzed using interpretive phenomenological analysis, which identified three main themes: 1) Memento mori; 2) Existential swings; 3) Memento vivere. The participants in the study perceived the finitude of their lives, sensing approaching death in their weakening bodies and observing themselves in a moment of life’s standstill — here they experienced a range of emotions, including hopelessness, fear of death, and acceptance. Ultimately, people turned toward life, chose their way of being in the face of suffering, focused on the present moment, and created a legacy through connection with others, thereby overcoming the transience of life. Based on the study’s findings, recommendations are provided for medical psychologists who provide palliative care services.
