The aim of this study was to investigate the associations of alcohol consumption with perceived stress, emotion regulation strategies, and risk of exercise addiction among adults with different levels of physical activity. The study sample consisted of 131 adult volunteers: 75.6% women, 23.7% men, and one non-binary participant (0.8%). Participants were 18-63 years old (M = 29.1; SD = 11.2). Five standardised instruments were used: the Fast Alcohol Screening Test (FAST), the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-14), the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ), the Exercise Addiction Inventory (EAI), and the short form of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ-SF). Data were analysed using Spearman correlations, multiple linear regression, and hierarchical cluster analysis. Of the five hypotheses tested, only one was supported: risk of exercise addiction was positively associated with alcohol consumption (ρ = 0.28; p = 0.001). Perceived stress, emotion regulation strategies, and overall physical activity level were not statistically significantly associated with alcohol consumption. Regression analysis showed that risk of exercise addiction was the only statistically significant predictor of alcohol consumption (β = 0.24; p = 0.005), accounting for 5.8 % of its variance. Hierarchical cluster analysis identified three profiles of physically active individuals; however, these profiles did not differ significantly in alcohol consumption. The results suggest that alcohol consumption among physically active adults may be better explained by the psychological relationship with exercise than by the amount of physical activity or the general level of perceived stress. |
