This thesis examines the interaction between family members and care institution staff during the period of long-term social care of an older person. The aim of the study is to analyse the characteristics of this interaction and the factors influencing it. A quantitative method – a questionnaire survey – was used. The study involved care institution employees (n = 160) and relatives of older persons (n = 101), which allowed the comparison of both groups’ experiences and evaluations. The results showed that the decision on long-term care is usually made jointly within the family and out of necessity, and is accompanied by emotional experiences. Communication between relatives and staff occurs quite regularly, is often mutual and takes place in different forms. Interaction is generally based on cooperation and focused on the well-being, health and emotional state of the older person. The quality of interaction is mainly influenced by information sharing, the nature of communication and the alignment of expectations, although evaluations differ between staff and relatives. Although communication is evaluated positively, not all relatives feel fully involved in the care process. |
