The master’s thesis examines how the genre of artistic research (AR) is institutionalized and internalized within the doctoral program in performing and screen arts at Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre. An interpretive case study based on Peter L. Berger and Thomas Luckmann’s theory of the social construction of reality is conducted. The study analyzes documents regulating the arts doctorate, statistical indicators, observations of four defenses, and seven semi-structured interviews. The research reveals that more than two-thirds of doctoral graduates in performing and screen arts continue their careers outside academic and educational institutions (according to 2025 data from Student register of the Education Management Information System, administrated by the National Education Agency). At the same time, a review of the documents governing the arts doctorate shows that, at the level of objectivation, the AR genre in the arts doctorate context is aligned more closely with academic practices. Material collected through defense observations and semi-structured interviews highlights the variability in how the AR genre and the aims of the arts doctorate are internalized. Additionally, reflections about the development of the arts doctorate in informants’ narratives indicate that the value of AR is increasingly being internalized within artistic contexts. The thesis provides a basis for continuing the currently limited research in the field of doctoral studies in performing and screen arts in Lithuania. |
