Abstract [eng] This paper examines the interaction between addiction and resocialization in the context of community-based sentences and seeks to clarify how addiction affects the resocialization process of individuals under the supervision of the Probation Service. Addiction and resocialization play a significant role in the probation supervision process, as substance use disorders often affect convicts’ ability to comply with court-imposed obligations and probation conditions, participate in rehabilitation programs, and successfully reintegrate into society. In the scientific literature, addiction and resocialization are analyzed in relation to criminal behavior, the effectiveness of probation, and social reintegration, while studies of probation practice examine the balance between control and support functions. However, there is still a lack of empirical research in Lithuania that examines the interaction between addiction and resocialization from the perspectives of both convicts and probation officers. To ensure the smooth conduct of the study, the focus was on the thesis’s objective: to reveal the interaction between addiction and resocialization within the Probation Service, assessing how addiction affects the resocialization of convicts and the recurrence of criminal offenses. Two methods were used to complete this thesis: an analysis of the scientific literature and interviews. The data obtained during the study allow us to conclude that relationships based on motivation, trust, and cooperation are essential for successful resocialization and overcoming addiction. The study revealed that the effectiveness of the social, psychological, and motivational assistance provided by the Probation Service is limited by a shortage of staff, excessive workloads, a lack of training, and a shortage of long-term, addiction-focused programs.
