Abstract [eng] The thesis examines two modernization campaigns of the living space in Lithuania - interwar and Soviet. The object of the work was analysis of the representation of the living space modernization campaign in the 20th century. The research was based on the two cases studies - interwar Kaunas and Soviet Vilnius. The campaigns of modernization of the living space in 20th century Lithuania is being seen as a reflection of political, social and cultural processes. The PhD thesis emphasizes the principal and structural similarities and differences between two modernization campaigns. In the paper is revealed the influence of different political systems on the processes of modernization of living space, emphasizing the political imperative or modernization “from above” factor. It was compared the values of orientation which caused the implementation of living space modernization campaigns. Important part of the study was analysis of the urban phenomenon of the living space, its interpretation and formation during two campaigns of the modernization, highlighting the practices and processes in which the living environment and dwelling were transformed from the private sphere to the field of political interest.
