This paper presents an updated and critical overview of the Balto-Slavic denominative formations from an Indo-European perspective. Some important points: 1) denominatives in *-ō-ie/o̯ - and *-ā-ie/o̯ - were still directly linked to o- and āstem nouns, respectively; 2) Balto-Slavic has no “ā-factitives”; 3) we have a far better understanding of the development of PIE *-eie/o̯ -denominatives (viz. causativeiteratives) in Balto-Slavic than just a few years ago; 4) we have new accounts of some suffixes; 5) Balto-Slavic deadjectives included not only essives and fientives, but also specialized factitives (most likely continuing PIE nu-factitives); 6) after the breakup of Balto-Slavic, Baltic and Slavic evolved in different directions, in part due to different areal stimuli; 7) issues of directionality in the interplay between denominatives and deverbatives are also discussed. |
