Abstract [eng] Abstract Background. Worldwide, nearly half of women of reproductive age use modern contraceptive methods, with oral contraceptives being among the most commonly used. Hormonal contraceptive pills, which are widely used in gynecology, are prescribed not only for the prevention of unintended pregnancy but also for therapeutic purposes. Aim. To review the indications for the use of oral contraceptives and the characteristics of different groups of preparations based on scientific literature. Methods. A literature search was conducted in the PubMed database. Studies published in English between 2016 and 2026 were analyzed. A total of 35 articles were included in the final analysis. A descriptive literature review was performed. Results. The primary indication for contraceptive pills is pregnancy prevention. They are also widely used in the management of menstrual cycle disorders, including premenstrual syndrome, amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea, and heavy or irregular bleeding. Contraceptive pills are associated with a reduction in symptoms of endometriosis, polycystic ovary syndrome, uterine fibroids, and acne, as well as with an improvement in patients’ quality of life. Conclusions. When used consistently, contraceptive pills demonstrate high contraceptive efficacy. However, their effectiveness depends on adherence to the prescribed regimen, therefore, they are classified as second-tier contraceptive methods. In addition to pregnancy prevention, contraceptive pills are widely used in the management of various gynecological conditions.
