Abstract [eng] Introduction. Cardiovascular diseases are one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in Lithuania. Elevated low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol is one of the main modifiable risk factors and can be effectively managed with statins. Despite proven benefits, the use of statins remains controversial. Understanding public knowledge and attitudes may help identify gaps in cardiovascular prevention. Aim. To investigate public knowledge, attitudes, and factors associated with statin use. Methods. A quantitative cross-sectional study was conducted using an anonymous online questionnaire in Lithuania. Results. A total of 267 respondents participated (210 women; 57 men), with a mean age of 49,2 ± 11,9 years. Most respondents understood the purpose of statins (70,8%) and recognised their effectiveness. However, a substantial proportion reported insufficient reliable information (74,9%) and concerns about statin’s safety. Statin users felt more informed, showed greater trust in physicians, and were more likely to perceive statins as beneficial and to support their long-term use. Respondents with cardiovascular diseases were more likely to support longterm statin use, but they also reported greater concern about potential side effects. Additionally, individuals with cardiovascular diseases who were not using statins were less likely to report that physicians clearly explained the benefits and risks of the treatment. Decisions regarding statin use were primarily influenced by physicians‘ recommendations, but personal attitudes and information obtained from the media also played a significant role. Conclusions. Although overall attitudes toward statins are favourable, significant gaps in knowledge and concerns about their safety remain.
