| Abstract [eng] |
Background. Adolescents and young adults (15–39 years old) with cancer, the AYA population, face psychiatric and psychosocial challenges that disrupt their natural development. Aim: This review aimed to analyze the psychiatric and psychosocial problems of AYAs with cancer described in the scientific literature, as well as methods for addressing them. Materials and Methods. A narrative literature review was conducted, including scientific articles published between 2016 and 2026 Results. The review of foreign literature showed that AYAs with cancer face various psychiatric and psychosocial problems specific to their stage of life. More frequently than the general population, AYAs experience psychological distress, anxiety, and depression; these individuals are also characterized by fear of cancer recurrence. By disrupting the course of AYAs’ lives, cancer affects psychosocial domains such as body image, social life, work capacity, romantic relationships, and fertility. Conclusion. Support for AYAs with cancer must begin with appropriate identification and assessment of problems. A coordinated and competent team of specialists is essential for supporting AYAs, taking into account their individual psychological and psychosocial needs. It is important to continue providing support to AYAs after the completion of cancer treatment. |
