Abstract [eng] The prevalence of obesity is increasing worldwide, and more than 20% of all human population are obese. It has been shown that there exists a subset of the obese population without any metabolic abnormalities. This phenotype of obesity is termed as metabolically healthy obesity. It was determined that metabolically healthy obese patients have a distinct fat distribution pattern, a favorable inflammatory profle as well as different adipose tissue metabolism and composition. Despite the increased interest in the metabolically normal obesity, there are no unique criteria to define metabolic health. A better understanding of the underlying causes of metabolic health would help to distinguish the obesity phenotypes, aid in the development of new preventive strategies for those who are at a greater risk of developing metabolic abnormalities and prevent any excessive dieting, pharmacological and surgical treatments in healthy obese individuals. This study used anthropometric, ultrasonographic and 1H-MRS tools to determine whether superfcial and deep subcutaneous, preperitoneal and visceral adipose tissue depots differed in their distribution and fatty acid composition in obese patients with and without metabolic syndrome. Our research proved that visceral adipose tissue thickness measured using ultrasonography and adipose tissue composition has a strong correlation with the determinants of metabolic health. It was found that adiponectin concentration, visceral adipose tissue thickness measured using ultrasonography and fatty acids in subcutaneous adipose tissue are independent prognostic factors in metabolic syndrome determination in obese patients.
