Abstract [eng] The object of the scientific monograph submitted for the thesis defence is the ideological-political evolution of Lithuanian social democracy in 1914-1919. The aim of the monographic research is to examine, reconstruct and analyse the ideological-political evolution of Lithuanian social democracy during the period of restoration of the statehood of Lithuania in the late 1920s. Part 1 presents a broad discussion on the historiography of Lithuanian social democracy, both non-communist and communist. Part 2 is devoted to the description of the historical development of European and Lithuanian social democracy in the late 19th c. and early 20th c. Parts 3–6 deal with the ideological-political and organizational development of Lithuanian social democracy during the First World War and in the first post-war years, both within and outside Lithuania. One of the main aspects under consideration is the relationship between social democracy and the process of formation of the statehood of Lithuania. The monograph focuses on the role of S. Kairys and other social democrats in this process and their relationship with the adoption of the Act of 16 February, 1918. The monograph also reveals the impact of Russian Bolshevism on the individual currents of Lithuanian social democracy and shows how part of the Lithuanian social-democratic movement transformed into the Lithuanian (Lithuanians’) communist movement. Emphasis is also placed on the position of social democrats towards formation of the government of the Lithuanian state, their internal political differentiation processes in the late 1918 and early 1919, the relationship with the communist government of the Russian Bolshevik Red Army “brought” by V. Kapsukas, as well as the revival of LSDP, its ideological attitudes and political posture in the executive power and opposition in 1919.
