Abstract [eng] The aim of the research was to determine and estimate spasticity in spinal injury and its influence on personal independence. 46 persons with spinal cord injuries were tested. They had been diagnosed with complete spinal cord injury (ASIA-A, angl. American Spinal Injury Association). The age range of the research participants was 25-43 years. The research was carried out in the Lithuanian Paraplegic Association Landscape Therapy and Recreation Centre in Monciskes and Kaunas Recreation and Sport Club for Disabled People in 2009-2010. Spasticity was evaluated in two aspects: determining muscle resistance while performing passive movements according to the Ashworth scale, and evaluating spasm frequency according to the Spasm scale. Personal independence level was determined according to the modified Kenny method. The research proved the theory that spasticity in spinal cord injury is subject to the level of spinal cord injury. In the case of upper (Th1-7) thorasic spinal cord injury spasticity is higher than in the case of cervical and lower (Th8-12) thorasic spinal cord injury. Spasticity has a negative effect on the individual independence of participants with cervical and upper (Th1-7) thorasic spinal cord injury. In case of low (Th8-12) thorasic spinal cord injury spastisity has no effect on the individual independence. The level of spasticity of the participants with spinal cord injury duration of one year was similar to that of the particfipants with spinal cord injury of one year duration and longer. Spasticity has a negative effect on the individual indepence of the participants with spinal cord injury duration of one year.
