Abstract [eng] The images of freedom and liberation created in the Lithuanian periodical satirical magazine THE BROOM are analysed in the paper in the context of three social theories of laughter. At the beginning of the Lithuanian National Revival (Sąjūdis) and during the ongoing processes of Lithuania’s liberation a particular aim of Soviet satire was to create a specific image of freedom. Analysis of the content of THE BROOM and scientific studies shows that the magazine, like Soviet satire in general, implemented the tasks of Soviet satire and echoed the expectations of society about inner liberation. At the end of the 1980s not only philosophical and presumed but also realistic motives of (geo)political liberation also may be identified as the result of Sąjūdis activity and its aim to reinstate Lithuania’s independence. This specific time is marked by ironical reflections of national liberation and liberation of THE BROOM itself in satirical mass media. The findings of the research presented in the paper show that political liberation was understood in two ways by the magazine: a) as apparent liberation of the content of the magazine and b) as the relationship between political liberation, everyday problems and social vices.
