Abstract [eng] |
Aim of this thesis, based on critical discourse analysis, was to examine and to compare how the Roma people and refugees’ groups are represented in Lithuanian mass media. The main aim of this paper was achieved after analyzing mass media’s discourse using Edward W. Said's orientalism theory. Theory proves that refugees and Roma people are groups belonging to the Orient, which is being seen as an opposite of Europe, and, in particular, Lithuania (Oxidant). Orientalism theory was chosen because it helps to explain how Europe sees “others”, which types of representation are dominating, which techniques are selected to speak of Orient. Said extends Stuart Halls’ representation system, discourse theory, in which “others” are represented emphasizing differences, grouping using stereotypes, and using power to create new discourses and representations. Here, the mass media power theory can be seen, which complement both authors and states that mass media has a large influence on the development of Orient representations. This paper is relevant in order to understand who affects public’s opinion about refugees and Roma people, how and what tools are used to make influence to this view, where the negative opinion about these groups comes from and how it can vary. The research is based on 747 articles from biggest Lithuanian online news websites – DELFI, 15min and lrytas.lt. |
