Abstract [eng] Having a child with a disability is challenging but the way parents cope with it varies among child's disability. The aim of the study was to understand the relationships between parental stress, self-esteem and coping strategies used. 127 parents participated in the study from whom 97 had a child with autism spectrum disorder and 30 had a child with Down syndrome. Measures used in this study were: Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale ( RSES), Questionnaire on Resources and Stress, Short Form (QRS-F) and The Family Crisis Oriented Personal Evaluation Scale (F-COPES). Student t-test and two-way ANOVA were used for making comparisons between groups, Pearson correlation was used to find the relationship between factors and multiple regression analysis was used for making prognoses. No differences were found between parental stress, self-esteem and coping strategies among the two groups of parents. There is a link between parental stress, self-esteem and coping strategies and child's everyday functioning though. Child's functioning abilities also predict parental stress in both groups and such coping strategies as reframing, passive appraisal and acquiring social support predict parental stress and self-esteem.
