In this Master‘s thesis language expression in the collection Skersvėjų namai by Danutė Kalinauskaitė was analysed. The authors of the thesis explores headings, lexis, analyses syntactic level, provides an overview of the characters. The main results of the analysis indicate that metaphorical, intertextual or notably non-poetic headings of the short stories are related to the artistic world of the work. The reader is often astounded by the headings that create an unexpected effect. D. Kalinauskaitė creates a suggestive artistic world of the short stories by employing a lexis that does not fit the frame of the common Lithuanian language, recreating idioms, and creating neologisms. Comparisons and tropes (or their variety) in the short stories reveal the author’s ability to mix and match unexpected spaces, to exploit details of human senses, details of everyday life, include intertextual elements. Creating sentences of varied length (the shortest being one word, the longest – more than fifty) and using different means of binding, she creates a single story that can appear spontaneous to the reader. By using the whole capacity of Lithuanian lexis and prospects of syntax the author creates highly realistic characters in the novels. Their nomination units in the text play the role of sentence binding and provide additional contextual information. |
