Abstract [eng] |
Lazdynų Pelėda has been pushed to the margins of the Lithuanian literary canon partly because of a habit to equate works written by the sisters Sofija Ivanauskaitė-Pšibiliauskienė and Marija Ivanauskaitė-Lastauskienė with melodrama. It is still assumed in the Lithuanian scholarly discourse that the concept of melodrama is hardly a valuable tool in the arsenal of instruments used for literary and cultural analysis. By contrast, this dissertation follows a notion that researching melodrama presents a possibility to investigate the peculiarities and functions of melodramatic conventions in Lazdynų Pelėda’s texts more thoroughly and establishes an additional perspective of viewing the relation between them and their audience. Thus the aim of the present dissertation is to make the melodramatic expression handy for a multilayered sociocultural interpretation, to describe the melodramatic mode detected in Lazdynų Pelėda’s texts and its ties with the processes of modernity (related to social changes and perceptive as well as epistemological shifts) at the end of 19th c. – beginning of the 20th c.
