Abstract [eng] Multilinguality and contacts of cultures are researched in this thesis based on the analysis of manuscript diary, written by student Vytautas Civinskis (1887–1910). Residing and studying in Russia, Lithuania, Germany, he wrote it for about 6 years in Polish, Lithuanian, Russian languages, also inserting lexis in German, French, Latin, English, Latvian, Jidish. It was discovered that two languages most often used by him were the varieties – the sociolect of Polish nobles, living in Lithuania and Lithuanian dialect of Anykščiai and Kupiškis inhabitants in Aukštaitija. The level of cultures was considered based on the theory of the precedent phenomenon. Language switches on the various linguistic levels were not only influenced by the usual language interference, but also created on purpose (which is expressed in the suggested term „language montage“) in order to achieve pragmatic goals (creating effects of irony, emphasis, euphemism or striving for precision), and the precedent phenomena of different backgrounds could be creatively merged. It was found that the diarist could create additional expressive effects using the means para-verbal expression. The diarist was quite often reflecting on his own linguistic behaviour, tried to find the most precise means of expression, creating an unique idiolect. Idiolect is a phenomenon understudied in Lithuania and in the world science. The notes of a multilingual person allow the rare opportunity to observe the changing linguistic repertoire and attitudes of the person. The case study shows the shift in the linguistic and psychological identity, typical for the beginning of the 20 century, presenting a study of previously unknown egodocument, useful for study of the everyday life of the epoch.
