Abstract [eng] The competence of media representatives – journalists – is one of the key topics of public discussion. Although professional journalists are trained in three Lithuanian universities – Vilnius University (undergraduate and graduate), Vytautas Magnus University (graduate), Klaipėda University (undergraduate), media owners (employers) do not lay down any special requirements for the professional education of a journalist. In other words, persons representing the interests of media owners set such professional requirements for their employees which can be easily met by persons of any profession. This is one of the answers to the question often raised in society: why do journalists cover complicated problems so superficially? Why aren’t they able or are unwilling to go deeper into the matter, rather than just splattering the scandal or chasing sensations or intrigues? The author of the article analyses competences and skills of a professional journalist and carries out a quantitative research – a questionnaire survey of journalists working for different mass media employers. The survey is focused on the competences and skills necessary for media representatives and the requirements of journalistic professionalism set by mass media owners/employers as well as the audience. The results of the research reveal that the main competence required from journalists working in Lithuanian mass media is general education (60 percent of respondents); almost half of respondents (40 percent) point out the competence of knowledge of one area of social life, knowledge of a foreign language and ability to use information technologies. The analysis of the requirements for a professional journalist set by mass media owners/employers leads to the conclusion that so far Lithuanian media owners/employers have not set high standards for a journalist’s qualification and professionalism. This conclusion is also confirmed by the data obtained from the quantitative research, which show that employers mostly appreciate the ability to perform many tasks and loyalty.
