Abstract [eng] For several decades, media language has been in the centre of attention of representatives of various sciences, including linguists. Scientists pay special attention to the headlines of newspaper articles. The headline is an important part of a newspaper article, because it is in a strong position. The headline attracts a reader’s attention and affects his decision whether to read the article or not. There are a lot of ways to create a headline attractive for the reader, and one of them is the use of references to precedent phenomena. The purpose of the present article is to examine precedent phenomena and their role in newspaper headlines. An analysis of precedent phenomena as units endowed with cultural and meaningful information provides an opportunity to study the characteristics of national consciousness reflected in the language of the press. Knowledge of universal and national precedent phenomena is an indication of belonging to this era and to the culture of the countries of the languages studied. The data source of online publications of www.lrytas.lt and www.ntv.lt from the period between 2010 and 2012 was used in this research. The goal of the present research is to identify common patterns and the use of national characteristics of precedent phenomena in accordance with such source spheres as “Cinema” and “Literature”. On the basis of the research, some functions of precedent phenomena – informative and entertaining – have been revealed.
