The stem dok-š- of the Lithuanian surname Dõkšas is a variant of the stem dauC-š-. It originated in the shortening of compound proper nouns. This account of Dõkšas is supported by its geographical distribution in relationship to dauk-š- and by the common anlaut and auslaut dok-š- and dauk-š-. Lithuanian surnames with a stem dak-š- are of the same origin, as supported by the distribution of the names in dauC(-C)-. The writing of the /au/ of dauk-š- as <a>, <o> is paralleled by other material and is supported by Polish surnames of Baltic origin in dauk-š- and dVk-š-. Lith. Dõkšas is probably of the same origin as the Latvian Dakša, which, to judge by the existing Latvian names in dauk-š-, also originated in hypocoristics, although its ultimate explanation remains unclear. |
