Abstract [eng] This paper examines the differentiation of suicide rates by gender, age, and place of residence. The analysis is based on aggregated data from The Institute of Hygiene (Lithuania) and Statistics Lithuania. The aim of this analysis is to evaluate the contribution of suicide mortality rates to changes in life expectancy in different demographic groups in Lithuania. Analysis period covers period from 2007 to 2017. The analysis was conducted by using life expectancy decomposition method. The decrease in suicide rates among rural men was found to have the greatest contribution to the increase in life expectancy – 0.44 out of 6.77 years of overall life expectancy increase. The greatest positive changes in life expectancy due to the decrease in suicide rates were recorded among men under 40 years: 0.20 out of 0.22 years of life expectancy increase in all age groups in urban areas and 0.32 out of 0.44 years of life expectancy increase in all age groups in rural areas. Female suicide contribution to the increase in life expectancy was close to zero in both urban (-0.01 years) and rural (0.09 years) areas. Thus, changes in suicide rates confirm one of the key features of the post-soviet mortality model, i.e. selective changes in mortality rates across different demographic groups.
