A thorough survey of the evidence reveals that compound names in <vad->, <vod-> are variants of the well-known stem vaid- (regularly written as <vaid->, <void->) with the second member gin-, min-, ir vil-. This supports the hypothesis that vaid- is also written <ved-> in non-compound personal names. Some of the names in vaid- usually quoted in the onomastic literature are not real, but were created according to the model of other personal names. Reliable names in vaid- (written <vaid->, <void->) are Sùvaidas, Vaĩd(i)ginas, Vaĩd(i)minas, Vaĩd(i)vilas and Vaĩdvinas. The hypothesis that the /ai/ of vaid- is written <a>, <o> and sometimes <e> allows us to detect further compound names in vaid- with the second stem but-, gaud-, gint-, jot-, mint-, vain- and with the first stem in do-, gel-. The idea that /ai/ can be written as <o>, <a> is supported by the writing of names with the first stem vaiš-. Another variant of vaid- may be <vait-> (with the second element kant- or gin-) and <vai-> (with the second element gin- and vil-). |
