Abstract [eng] |
The objective of the paper is to determine the scope of violations related to the protection of minors against the detrimental effect of public information over the 2009–2012 period, and to compile a list of measures that could help reduce the number of violations. In 2009–2012, a total of 104 violations were registered in mass media, of which 40 were related to the display of human remains. After carrying out a Delfi survey, six media experts compiled a list of measures which they feel could help decrease violations of the Law on the Protection of Minors against the Detrimental Effect of Public Information. The survey participants rated inter-institutional cooperation very favourably. According to them, (self-) regulatory authorities could provide more counsel to mass media. The high incidence of violations of legal provisions related to the personal data of minors may imply two things: 1) journalists and editors are not familiar with the statutory requirements (unlikely); 2) journalists and editors violate these provisions deliberately in order to attract as large an audience as possible and satisfy public curiosity (interest), thus generating higher income. |
