Abstract [eng] The paper discusses the opinion of American Lithuanian readers regarding individual 19th century Lithuanian periodical publications (primarily newspapers) in the United States. During this period, US-based Lithuanian press was focused on issues of journalism practice, such as the definition of a message and the characteristics of a news story. Lithuanian editorial offices sought answers to these questions, referring to the definitions of news presented by American editors (e.g. the editors of The Kansas City Star, The St. Paul Dispatch, The Des Moines Capital, The San Francisco Chronicle, The Omaha Daily News, and Collier’s magazine). In order to provide a clearer context for the surveys of readers of Lithuanian newspapers conducted at that time, the paper includes a detailed presentation of the deliberations of Lithuanian and American authors on the definition of news as well as its role and importance. The paper uses data from questionnaires, surveys, separate topics, answers from the editorial office and other research. It also discusses the reaction of editorial offices to readers’ comments and requests.
